Three hundred thirty (330) pupils of Matanag Elementary School in Daraga, Legazpi City, Albay were very happy to receive school supplies from EMBRACE in the Oplan Bisita Eskwela I Am STRONG (BES) conducted on August 15, 2018.
The activity was graced by PMFTC’s Intelligence Investigation and Security Officer – Bicol Lorenz Reamico, Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5)–Police Community Relations (PCR) PSupt. Frande Echaluce, FJGAD Officer PCI Rhena Failoga, WCPD PCI Mary Grace Tagtag, WCPD Chief PSI Ma. Luisa Tino, the PRO-5 Dancers and SPO1 Sybil Asper.
PCR Police Superintendent Frande Echaluce in his message thanked EMBRACE and Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation Inc. (JVOFI) for the quick response to their request for school supplies. Mentioning that ‘the school supplies are a big help and inspiration to the Bicolano pupils to go on with their studies.’
Prior to the distribution of school supplies, PSI Ma. Luisa Tino, Chief of the Women and Children’s Protection Desk Regional Office 5, gave a short discussion on Children’s Rights. She started off with a question on the pupils’ notions of a police. With the students hesitating at first, she explained that the police are everybody’s friends and the children can approach them especially when they need help.
To further prove that police officers can be as flexible and approachable, the PRO5 Dancers showed a dance number which made the children giggle. A teacher also serenaded the guests.
It was noted that last January 17, 2018, surrounding communities of Mt. Mayon within 7-8 km radius were evacuated as it started to spew out ash and lava. Matanag Elementary School was included in the danger zone so many residents had to evacuate including families of their students. Thus, apart from receiving the school supplies which made the pupils very happy, the activity also reminded them to be STRONG in times of adversities.
