Coastal Cleanup and Mangrove Planting at Parian Oeste, Bauang

Mangroves, or “Bakawan”, provide a wide range of ecosystem benefits to the communities. They help regulate flood control, erosion, source of livelihood, and protection against storm surges and tsunamis for the communities living in the coastal areas. Numerous efforts for rehabilitation and conservation of mangroves have been implemented because they are proven effective to control the impact of natural calamities.

Parian Oeste, Bauang, La Union is one of the designated marine protected areas in La Union for its 162.42-hectare of mangroves which serves as protection against natural calamities and provides livelihood to the communities living in the area. On June 9, 2022, the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Inc. conducted a one-day coastal cleanup and mangrove planting activity in the area with the theme, “AKSYON PARA SA NATATANGING MUNDO” to promote awareness of clean coast and conservation of marine protected areas. With the joint effort of a JVOFI, LGU Bauang, and other project partners, the activity was a success. 5,600 mangrove propagules were planted and wastes were collected.

It was enthralling to see stewards of creation come together to participate and unite in this endeavor to protect the environment. It was very rewarding and fulfilling that in our way, we were able to act and contribute to the very purpose of the activity.

However, our purpose does not end in one day, we still have a long way to go. To promote sustainable conservation and rehabilitation of the environment, participation from the community is necessary. The participation of the youth is crucial in the conservation and protection of the environment. As stewards, we have a huge responsibility in ensuring that the next generation gets to enjoy the beauty that nature has to offer. With this, active participation from the youth is highly recommended. In coordination with the National Youth Commission, SK (Sangguniang Kabataan) can be mobilized and participate in these kinds of activities. They need to be aware of the benefits nature provides so that they can appreciate and protect it. Such that, our efforts today will not be in vain but it will be passed on from generation to generation.
