Education through Creative and Organized Knowledge-Building for the Environment (ECOKE) Youth Camp

Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) from the coastal barangays of Bauang, San Fernando, and San Juan gathered in the Bauang Bakawan Eco-Tourism Park on August 10, 2024, for the Education through Creative and Organized Knowledge-Building for the Environment (ECOKE) Youth Camp.
The ECOKE Youth Camp, which took place over the weekend at Bauang, was designed to engage young leaders through a blend of creative activities, team building, and informative sessions.
One of the youth camp’s creative activities was the photo essay. The participants were tasked with capturing photos and creating visual stories. Photographs and visual storytelling can be powerful tools for advocacy and information dissemination. Despite the limited time given to them, each team was able to come up with visual stories that they captured within the Eco-Tourism Park.
Representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resourcesβ€”Environmental Management Bureau (DENR EMB) Region 1 also presented an information education campaign on RA 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, and plastics and their properties.
One of the components of the ECOKE Youth Camp were team-building activities led by LINK, or Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan volunteers. The games emphasized the importance of working together, problem-solving, and leadership while developing a stronger sense of community.
The participants engaged in an "ecology web" activity to learn about the interdependence of ecosystems. The participants discussed how ecosystems are connected. They also conducted simulations to understand the impact of disconnecting any one of them.

Mr. Celso Jucutan, from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) reminded the participants as he led the participants to create a Caring for Our Home Commitment. He emphasized that it should be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. These commitments will be implemented in their respective barangays.
Finally, they pledged to be agents of change in their family, school, community, and beyond. To inspire others to join others in caring for our common home.

The the Education through Creative and Organized Knowledge-Building for the Environment (ECOKE) Youth Camp is under the Plastic Recovery and Recycling for Clean Coasts (or Clean Coasts Project).
The Plastic Recovery and Recycling for Clean Coasts (or Clean Coasts Project) was a two-year project funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation Inc. The project has a 6-month extension that is currently implemented by the JVOFI. The project was implemented in the coastal barangays of Bauang, San Juan, and San Fernando in La Union. It aimed to reduce plastic pollution in these barangays through the collective participation of community stakeholders in the sustainable management of plastic waste.
