Words and Colors: Bokod Students Create Art to Help Save Mt. Purgatory

Inspired by the theme, Saving and Protecting Mount Purgatory – Mangisi, 4 pupils of Poodan Elementary School started their 10 kilometer walking journey at 6:00 in the morning towards the venue of the Poster Making Contest at MES Hall, Poblacion, Bokod Benguet. 

Their output, “Chontog Purgatory mapetpetan enog i diyoltahan, panpatuhan ched pansigdan” (Mt. Purgatory needs human heart, never make it bald, for it is very hard to break a nature’s heart), according to them reflects to their feelings who are living on the mountains. “We have seen the effects of indiscriminate cutting of trees, we see them as we walk to school and we thank this contest for opening an opportunity for us to express our thoughts on saving the mountains at the same time showcase our talents”.

The contest organized by the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Inc. under the Saving Mt. Purgatory Project funded by the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation, Inc. intends to open opportunity to showcase talents, engage the young minds to the project and inculcate to them the importance of the environment. The 10 slogans output of the contest is expected to be used in the design and development of IEC Materials for the project such as flyers, brochures and signages.

Judges were representatives from the Benguet Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, Bokod Tourism Office and National Power Corporation. Criteria for judging are: Relevance to the theme- 30%, Creativity- 30%, Originality – 30%, 10% for the Impact and Presentation.

The winners for the elementary level are: 1st Place– Bokod Central School represented by Marijoe D. Calawen, Renette T. Hilario, Jezrelle Feign D. Jacob, Arabelle L. Mackay and Azra L. Libag; 2nd Place– Karoa Elementary School represented by Shiela D. Ledda, Mikee N. Camilo, Cathy N. Ano, Aivlys N. Boliquen, Trisha D. Beray, Clairol P. Fermin and May Ann G. Padon and; 3rd Place– Pilpiok Elementary School: Juberta M. Dugaysan, Judilyn W. Guinoran, Alexis A. Payangsi, Jervin A. Cangsan and Lawrinel N. Cay-as.

For the High School level, 1st Place– Bokod National Highschool-Main represented by Jed A. Cangsan, Xavier Q.  Ayadi and Rana Faye A. Hilario; 2nd Place – Immaculate Conception High School represented by Adrian S. Parawe, Nesrine S. Alban and Kyla Jhennie Anne Barredo and 3rd Place– Immaculate Conception High School: Tiffanie Grace C. Bengeg, Niko P. Wakit and Cliffe Tyrrel D. Sinong. 

Other participating Schools are Bila, Ekip, Kawal and Poodan Elementary Schools.

In closing the activity, all the teachers who accompanied the participating students and Ms. Gloria Suayan, District School Supervisor expressed their gratitude to the Foundation and to the Donor for such activities that contribute to child development, hone their talents and boost their confidence, make them aware of their environment and let them understand and feel their importance to the community. “Thank you, we learned many things from this competition and we hope we would have more like this for the students,” said the teachers.
